The English dominated a better portion of Loudoun County, in mostly the eastern and southern sections. The English settled many areas of Virginia back in the 1600's and maintained a strong presence for hundreds of years. This area is where you'll find large estates (Southern Plantations), most of which are still in existence. This area was and is an area where fox hunting is very popular. Another sign of the strong English influence in this area. By contrast, mostly German & Scotch-Irish settled the northwestern area of Loudoun County. Many of these settlers came from the north from Pennsylvania through Maryland and settled this section of the county. This is evident in the architecture that you'll where smaller farms with stone houses and barns are commonplace; log structures are also plentiful.
