For several years, I have been trying to identify the parents of my GGGrandfather COLVIN POWELL, b. 4 Aug 1809, LOUDOUN CO., VA. He later moved to BELMONT CO., OH and married BARBARA ELLEN BALL there in 1829. They had several children one of whom was named LEVIN. He was my GGrandfather. Recently, I came across information about a LEVIN H. POWELL, b. 1757, MD who married ELIZABETH COHAGEN in LOUDOUN CO., VA in 1807. This LEVIN H. was allegedly the son of LEVIN and SARAH POWELL of Greenfields Plantation, SOMERSET CO., MD and served in the Colonial Army during the Revolution as a private. After the war, he was a weaver and lived in LOUDOUN and FAIRFAX Counties, VA. He allegedly enlisted in either NC or SC which makes me wonder if this is the same LEVIN H. POWELL from MD. His military records also show that he was also known as ELEVEN H. POWELL. LEVIN H. POWELL moved his family to the outskirts of Peoria, IL sometime around 1836 when he died there. His wife Elizabeth Cohagen applied for a widow's pension which was denied because she married him after the war but in her letter she says they had several children. She names those still living at home but fails to give the names or sexes of the two older children. It is my theory that these two were males named LEVIN and COLVIN who left the family in OH as it made its way to IL. Both LEVIN and COLVIN lived in BELMONT CO., OH and I suspect they were brothers and possibly the sons of LEVIN H. and Elizabeth Cohagen Powell. Can anyone provide information which would either confirm or refute my theory? Also can any confirm that this LEVIN H. POWELL is the same one listed in Rosalie Noland Ball's Genealogy of Lt. Colonel LEVEN POWELL of Loudoun County as the cousin of the good colonel? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Edwin E. Powell
