Thank you for the reply. However, the John W. I was looking for is named in this census record:
1850 VA FAIRFAX M432 Roll 942 p 141, image 2?
Calvin Coats M W 37 Farmer VA
Elizabeth Coats F W 24 VA
John W. Coats M W 12 VA
Thomas J. Coats M W 9 VA
Virginia F. Coats F W 6 VA
Ellen Coats F W 3 VA
And I suspect he would have been a Southern soldier, not a Union soldier. He would have been born about 1837-1839 and certainly of the correct age to get in the war.
We believe that John W (possibly William), along with his brother Thomas J. joined the Loudoun Rangers. WE know that Thomas J. died at his home in Leesburg, VA on September 28th 1885, so Thomas survived the war.
This was posted in 2001, message 563 but I haven't looked for any additional replies to that post yet.

Looking for information on a John Coats that was a member of Co. A, Loudoun Co. Independent Rangers VA Vol. in the War Between the States 1861 - 1865.
Have found his tombstone. There is no information on it except that above. Going to order a new marker that is in better shape and wanted to know more about John Coats and his family.
I would like to know if she found the same tombstone you did, or if she found a different one.
Again, thank you for the reply.
