Abel Davis of Loudoun Co., VA
Posted by: Joseph Reed Williams (ID *****9029) Date: November 30, 2008 at 15:53:39
  of 1800

My provable line of Davis descent begins with Abel Davis of Monongalia Co., VA. Abel was b. bewteen 1760 and 1770 in VA of MD. Abel m. Mary Huffman before 1790 - location questionable. However, the marriage may have been occurred in Loudoun Co. as Mary's parents appear to have lived in Loudon for some years prior to her father, John Huffman's death in 1792.
John Huffman was b. 1741 in Berks Co., PA. He m. Margaret. By 1775 they were living in Bedford Co., PA where their son John Huffman, Jr. was born. John served as a Ranger during the Rev. War and at some time owned property in Fayette Co. PA.
John Huffman's will (Will Book D252) indicates death in 1792 and names his devisees: Margaret, wife; and sons Phillip, Peter & Henry. Witnesses were James Rightmire & Peter Harmen.
My first clue to the presence of Abel Davis in Loudoun Co.was via IGI which named two of his son and 2 others who were sons of Barnibus Davis living White Co., IN.
Abel arrived in Monongalia Co. before 1790 where his first daughter, Mary was born. Abel was a cooper, farmer, Justice of the Peace, road wroker and supervisor and conducted a personal surety business.
An Abel Davis was named as a devisee of Benjamin Davis of Loudoun Co., Will Book G:68 who d. 1803: Heirs were- Hannah, Wife; daughters: Ann, Sarah, Rachel, Elizabeth. Sons: Abel & Howell.
Howell DAvis was b. 7 Dec 1759 and d. 1837. He m. Sarah ___: Their children were Mary Davis Tavenner, b. abt 1815;, Lucinda Davis, Jospeh Davis, b. abt 1810, Benjamin Davis,b. abt. 1810, m. Sarah White; Hannah Davis, m. Aden /Eden White; Sarah Ann Davis, m. Enos Gore and Nancey Davis m. Mr. Everitt.
There is no indication Abel Davis d. in Loudoun Co. However, in the 1810 census an Abel Davis was counted in Loudoun Co and an Abel Davis counted in Mononglia Co., VA so confusion reigns. Various dates are given the birth of Benjamin from 1712 to 1728. So the refining process is underway.

Joe
