James H. Bennett of Virginia, US Consul to Pernambuco, Brazil from 1820-1825, married Mary Amelia Hooff on 4 September 1823 in Alexandria, VA. She died in Hamilton, Loudoun, VA on 6 October 1837, leaving 3 children.
I think he may be a son of Charles Bennett, who died in December 1820 (will probated Jan. 1821) in Leesburg, Loudoun Co, VA.
The Index to Loudoun Co. Wills entry for Charles Bennett (will book N:285 1817/1821) does not mention any sons of Charles Bennett, only his granddaughters, Ann B. Hamilton, Jane D. (Hamilton) Wildman, her husband Enos Wildman, and a sister Mary Barnett (Bennett??).
A book called "Family tree book : genealogical and biographical : listing the relatives of General William Alexander Smith and of W. Thomas Smith," published by W. Thomas Smith 1922 has a paragraph about the Bennetts of Loudoun County on page 121: "In Louden County, Virginia was another family of Bennetts bearing the names: Thomas, Joseph, James, Charles. They were probably cousins. Charles Bennett whose will was probated in Louden Co. in 1821, probably married Mary Hamilton. He mentioned in his will Nancy, John, Charles, Mary, Winifred, Jane, Thompson, Jefferson, James, Elizabeth, Hamilton, and Sydnor."
I think Mary Hamilton was actually married to Charles Bennett's son, Charles Jr. This account of Charles Sr's will seems to include many more names than the will index indicates.
I have been trying to get the microfilm of Charles Bennett Sr's will from the Library of VA for a long time, but I guess someone else keeps beating me to it.
Does anyone have any information about Charles Bennett (his wife may have been Ann Routt) and his children? Based on my research so far he has children named: Sydnor b. abt. 1763, Dewanna b. abt. 1765 (m. John A. Binns), Charles Jr. b. bet. 1765-1784 (m. Mary Hamilton?), Winifred b.abt 1773 (m. John Hamilton), Elizabeth b. abt. 1776 (m. James Hamilton), and maybe James H.
