Something to think about - I know of a BALL individual who also has a perfect match with an individual with a different surname. After some searching it was discovered that an female ancestor of the other surname was rumored to have had an affair with someone by the surname of BALL. The family thought it was just a rumor, but apparently not.

It could also be that an ancestor of Reuben (or even Reuben) had a father who died, the mother remarried, and the child later used his step-father's surname. Just another possibility.

Good luck with your search for the common thread.
