Thank you Doris. I have contacted the Lee County Clerk's Office and a lady there checked the records and was unable to come up with anything that would prove that Mary Ely Smith was the daughter of Joseph Ely and Frances Hicks Ely. Frances Hicks Ely remarried and her name would have been Frances Russell at the time of her death in 1861. A copy of the sale of Frances' estate was found (by the lady at the Lee County Clerk's Office) so Frances evidently died in Lee County, VA. Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I could find proof that Mary was the child of Joseph and Frances?
