Nancy Jane (Reynolds) Clarkston
Posted by: Gloria Kay Vandiver Inman (ID *****2076) Date: July 26, 2002 at 23:22:04

I know several of you have already heard/seen this, but please, bear with me. Let me tell you first what I actually have, then what I thought I had, and now, what I no longer have in regards to this subject.

This is what I have:

1. Samuel2 Clarkston (Thomas1) was born 1812 in Crab Orchard, Lee Co, VA, and died Abt. 1881 in Polls Creek, Leslie Co, KY. He married Nancy Jane Reynolds March 10, 1831 in Lee Co, VA. She was born abt 1814 in VA/NC, and died 1880 in Polls Creek, Leslie Co, KY. (voluminous documentation for Samuel deleted except where it lends data to Nancy’s possible family)

Tax 2: 1834, Clay Co, KY, Samuel Clark with 1 male over 16 and 1 horse
Tax 3: 1835, Clay Co, KY; Samuel with 1 male above 21
Tax 4: 1836, Clay Co, KY; Samuel with 1 male over 21 and 1 horse' not listed in Lee co, VA or Harlan co, KY
Tax 5: 1837, Lee Co, VA; Samuel Clarkson with 1 male over 16, 1 horse, not listed in Clay or Harlan co, KY
Tax 6: 1838, Lee Co, VA; Samuel Clark with 1 male over 16, 1 horse, not listed in Clay co or Harlan co, KY; did not search Clay co any further as consistently found him in Lee co, VA, Harlan co, and Leslie and Perry Co, KY. NONE OF THE OTHER CLARKSTONS WENT TO CLAY CO, KY … WHY SAM & NANCY?

Children of Samuel Clarkston and Nancy Reynolds are:
2 i. John3 Clarkston, born 1832 in Lee Co, VA or Clay Co, KY (Source: Beverly Reach Perry.); died Bef. 1900. He married Helen McKinney October 12, 1859 in Lee Co, VA (Source: Marriage Record, "Virginia Marriages, 1851-1900", spells her name as Helan McKenney.); born September 1840 in Lee Co, VA; died June 8, 1924 in from headstone, Wise Co, VA. (deleted voluminous documentation)

He married (2) Mary Elizabeth Rice May 9, 1868 in Lee Co, VA (Source: Marriage Record, "Virginia Marriages, 1851-1900", she is name as Elizabeth Rice, he is identified only as James Clarkston.); born June 4, 1842 in E.TN; died November 12, 1921 in Hannah, OK. . (deleted voluminous documentation)
almost all census records say he was b. KY; 1880 says CLAY CO, KY (believe his mother's family was there)
Death Certificate: 1913, Taney Co, MO names his father as Sam Clark, birth place unknown, his mother, Nancy (last name almost unreadable) Randaltz? b. NC.

5 iv. Samuel Henry Clarkston, born May 21, 1842 in Lee Co, VA; died November 20, 1895 in Choska Creek, Indian Territory, OK He married Elvina Cress December 25, 1866 prob Perry Co,; born October 27, 1846 in Coon Creek, Leslie Co, KY; died August 18, 1927 in Ford, ID

He married (3) Mary Jane Eversole September 29, 1890 in Leslie Co, KY; born Abt. 1870 in Hazard, Perry Co, KY; died August 6, 1925 in Drip Rock, Leslie Co., KY.

10 ix. Millard Filmore 'F. M.' Clarkston, born May 1851 in Harlan Co, KY. He married Elizabeth Jane 'Betty' McKinney Abt. 1874; born August 1850 in KY.

This is what I THOUGHT I had;

Daniel1 Reynolds was born Bet. 1780 - 1790 in OH?/PA?, and died in KY?VA?TN?.
My grandmother, Celia Melvina (Clark) Caudill, stated that her grandmother (this Nancy Jane (Reynolds) Clark/Clarkston) had a brother/father by the name of David or Daniel.
Interesting note for research: 1830 Lee Co VA census... Runnells, Nancy 0001000000000-0011000100000 318 15. (never found this record again … must be going daft!).

Please note the strong disclaimer: None of this has been proven. Daniel's surname has also been noted as RANDLES, RANDOLS, & RUNNELS. We are not even positive that this Daniel was the father of the children associated with him here. As a matter of fact, some have said his given name was David. But with what circumstantial evidence that we have to date, he continues to be Daniel pending further documentation. The children of this Daniel have never been proven by any documentation. It is compiled strictly by circumstantial evidence and proximity in census and marriage records. Also contributions from descendants of the individuals named as children of Daniel. All of this needs to be verified before taken as fact.

The following is the bare (Few) Facts;
Census 1: 1840, Lee Co, VA, pg 98 Daniel, next door to dau Nancy Jane (Reynolds) Clarkston; 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0; he's alone age 50-60
Census 2: 1850, He's not there, but Nancy says her father b. OH, mother b. in NC
Tax 1: May 12, 1810, Lee Co, VA; 1-0-1
Tax 2: 1831, Lee Co, VA; Tax Rolls Show Him Living Next to Thomas Clarkstons (Nancy's Father-in-law)

POSSIBLE Children of Daniel Reynolds are:

1. Joseph Reynolds; (Source: KY, Letcher co, 1860 Federal Census.) was born Abt. 1805 in Rockbridge? Patrick Co?, VA, and died June 2, 1866 in Mallie, Knott Co, KY. He married Queentina 'Tina' Amburgey (Source: Dorothy Amburgey Griffith, Amburgey Ancestry in America.) December 12, 1833 in Perry Co, Ky (Source: Professional Genealogist, Rod Strucker, (Reynolds Gen Forum, info@intl-research.com), "Electronic," Joseph Reynolds, Jr., born about 1805 in Rockbridge County?, Virginia; married Queentina Amburgey on 12 Dec 1833 in Perry County, Kentucky.), daughter of John Amburgey and Elizabeth Hammons. She was born May 17, 1811 in Wilkes Co, NC, and died Abt. 1870 in Pine Top, Letcher Co, KY. Rod Stuckey; has placed this Joseph as s/o Joseph and Sarah (Perkins) Reynolds, of Floyd Co, KY . This Joseph Reynolds is residing in the 1850 census of Letcher County, Kentucky, which lists the following: 1850 1st District, Letcher County, Kentucky, p.152; 132 Joseph Reynolds M 45 Farmer 370 Virginia, Tena “ F 38 North Carolina; Elizabeth “ F 15 Kentucky; Sarah “ F 14 “; John “ M 12 “’ Nancy “ F 10 “; Wesley “ M 8 “; Polly “ F 7 “; Rebecca “ F 5 “; Martha “ F 3 “; William “ M 1 “ (there were a few more children after 1850 (gkvi))

2 Noah Milburn Reynolds (Source: Jhreynol@netacs.net, Janeen Reynolds, believes Noah Milburn Reynolds is s/o Henry & Sarah (Pippen) Reynolds (apr 2002).), born Abt. 1807 in VA (Source: KY, Letcher co, 1860 Federal Census.); died 1884 in Seco, Letcher Co., Ky. He married Mary 'Polly' Chaney Stone (Source: Rogers, Sage, personal records of <sage@wpc.com>, "Electronic."); born Abt. 1814 in Russell Co, VA.

Source: Nelda Percival <nelda_percival@hotmail.com> Gives parents of this Noah, as William Henderson Reynolds and Sallie Pipppen ( I would move him, but her Reynolds-Pippin link is slightly irregular)

3. Hamilton was born 1808 in Caswell Co, NC, and died Aft. 1860 in Scott Co, VA. He married Catherine Malinda Carr Abt. 1832. She was born Abt. 1813 in Caswell Co, and died in Scott Co, VA?.
Name 2: Hamilton 'Henry' Reynolds
Name 3: Hampton Reynolds (Source: VA, Scott Co Federal Census, 1850.)
Census: 1850, Scott Co, VA; hh 174-174; Hamilton Reynolds, age 42, b. nc

4 Lucy Reynolds, born Abt. 1812. She married John Standeford December 29, 1830 in Lee Co, VA.

5 Daniel Or David Reynolds (Source: VA, Lee Co Federal Census, 1880.), born Abt. 1813. He married Mary Cooper; born Abt. 1815.

Notes for Daniel Or David Reynolds: married twice, first wife's name is unknown.
Notes for Mary Cooper: had a son, Alfred, age 12 in 1880 census, which MIGHT indicate that she had a previous marriage and that COOPER was not her maiden name. or, Cooper was her maiden name and she had a child out of wedlock.

6 Nancy Jane Reynolds, born 1814 in VA; died 1880 in Polls Creek, Leslie Co, KY. She married Samuel Clarkston March 10, 1831 in Lee Co, VA; born 1812 in Crab Orchard, Lee Co, VA; died Abt. 1881 in Polls Creek, Leslie Co, KY. This is a duplication, of what was provided earlier, so will not take up any further space here

7 Henry Reynolds (Source: Jhreynol@netacs.net, Janeen Reynolds, "Electronic," believes Henry Reynolds b. 1815 is s/o Henry & Sarah (Pippen) Reynolds (apr 2002).), born 1815 in VA (Source: KY, Letcher co, 1860 Federal Census.); died Bef. 1860. He married Malinda Rasnick July 2, 1835 in Lee Co, VA (Source: Marriage Record.); born Abt. 1820 in TN.
Notes for Henry Reynolds:
Joan Justice <JJust2343@aol.com> Dec 2001, does not list children; Alexander or Mary J. (born after 1850 census), but instead, adds children; Prudence b. abt 1850, Louise J. b. abt 1853, William b. abt 1860, Louisa b. abt 1862. However, notice that the last child, Louisa b. 1862 is born, 2 years after we believe this Henry to have died (not present in 1860 census?)
Census 1: 1820, Russell Co, VA; 1 of 2 males under 10
Census 2: 1850, Scott Co, VA; hh 1351-1351; Henry Reynolds, age 35, b. va
Census 3: 1860, Russell Co, VA; Not sure, but this unknown male Reynolds, may be the dec'd husband and father of this family. Need to verify
Tax-pers prop: 1835, Lee Co, VA, East Dist, Page 13, row 17, Runnells, Henry, white polls = 0 (Why no white males over 16?)
Notes for Malinda Rasnick: See "Descendants of Jacob Rasnick”
What I’m left with;
Well, if I accept what I see and I’m told;
#`1. My Joseph and Tina (Amburgey) Reynolds have been absorbed into the Floyd Co, KY family of Joseph and Sarah (Perkins) Reynolds.
#2. My Noah is believed to belong to the family of the Henry and Sarah (Pippin) Reynolds.
#3. It looks like Hamilton should belong with Joseph but they already have a Hamilton about the same age who is definitely NOT the same Hamilton, as my Hamilton is in the 1850 Scott co VA census. Joseph and Sarah (Perkins) Reynolds’ Hamilton is in the 1850 Floyd Co, KY census… can’t be 2 places at the same time…
#4. Lucy, never did have anything more on her.
#5. Daniel/David, seemed to vanish … nothing further
#7. Henry and Malinda (Rasnick) Reynolds are being claimed by family of Henry and Sarah (Pippen) Reynolds.

I’m left with #6. my Nancy Jane (Reynolds) Clarkston … it’s lonesome alone on this planet.

I can play “what-if” till the cows come home, but without evidence, I’m no further ahead than I was 30 years ago. It’s not like I haven’t worked on this. I have probably documented thousands upon thousands of Reynolds (all variations), but all without any progress.

Does ANYONE have ANYTHING to add to this?

Thanks,
(frustrated) gkvi
