The mystery of the surname of Cynthia Chadwell, formerly Adams, has been solved.
According to a petition to the Scott County, Virginia chancery court, Cynthia Adams married William Chadwell and he left her the morning after they married. They were never divorced. William later moved to Lee County where he "married" another woman and raised a family. After being abandoned, she went to live in the house of James Davison where she met and began a relationship with Robert Davison, the son of James Davison. This information came directly from Cynthia's petition to the court and from subsequent "answer" of James Davison when she brought suit against him after Robert Davison died. She also had to petition the court to sue in her own name instead of including the name of William Chadwell as complainant.
There has been a long standing claim by many that Cynthia was the daughter of David Chadwell; however, there seems to be no basis for that speculation which may have been solely based on the fact that she carried the Chadwell name. Now we know she carried that name because she had married William Chadwell.
The name of her father is still unknown but she was born after her mother Molly Blakemore's first husband Jesse Adams was killed by Indians. Cynthia was born circa 1786/7 based on her ages in the 1850 and 1860 Grainger County, Tennessee census.
