Hi Judy. Major George Gibson, b.1732, Cork Co. Ireland, died 13 Apr. 1819, Lee Co., VA, son of Robert and Isabella Gibson of Ireland, married ca 1775, Augusta Co., Va to Elizabeth Smith, b. 1735/1750/1758 ?, Augusta Co., VA, died 1826, Lee Co., VA, dau./o Zachariah Smith of Augusta Co., VA. Robert and Elizabeth (Betsy) Gibson are buried in the Major George Smith Cemetery at Gibson Station in western Lee Co., VA. Robert and Isabella Gibson, born and married in Ireland came to Augusta Co., VA with George. No dates on them but they died in Augusta Co., VA. Robert's will of 22 Mar. 1760 was probated 20 May 1760, Augusta Co., VA George Gibson was a Major of Infantry in the 4th VA Regiment in teh REv. War. He wa at Valley Forge in the Winter of 1777-78. On April 16 1785 he was paid 69 pounda, the balance due him for his war service. After the war he moved his family westward to Washington Co., VA, in the portion that became Lee Co., VA in 1792. He was awarded about 700 acres in what became western Lee Co., VA. There he built Gibson's Fort for protection from the Indians. After the L & N railroad was built the area was named Gibson Station. Many people descended from Major George Gibson have become DAR members. George has many, many descendant in Lee Co., VA and elsewhere. The Early Settlers of Lee Co., VA, Vol. I, p. 141-158, 1977, by Anne Wynn Laningham has 17 pages of his descendants and related families. If you woul like all of these pages copied.
