Hi C. J. In the 1900 and 1910 Lee Co., VA (LCV) census records Emit Smallwood is listed as the grandson of Hugh F. No LCV marriage record (thru 1933) or cemetery record was found for Emit. An LDS Family Search online,VA (Morman Archives) id not find Emit or his parents. Hugh F. Smallwood, b. ca. 1839, Va, died 20 Oct 1919, LCV, son of John M. Smallwood and Sarah Quinley, married 2nd ca. 1875 to Mary Weaver, b. ca. 1855, Tn, died 12 Jan 1939 LCV. In the 1880 LCV census Hugh and Mary Smallwood had sons born in Tn: Angusta (son?), b. 1870, Thomas J., b. 1872 and John C., b. 1876. No information was found if one of them was the father of Emit.
