Gibson/Collins family Hancock Co. TN- Lee Co. VA
I am in need of help locating some family. I have come to a brickwall and am hoping some of this sounds familiar to another.
My greatgrandmother is named Cinthia Collins she married a James (Jeemes- Genes) I. Gibson on Nov 6, 1898 in Lee County Virginia. On the 1900 census they are living in Hancock County Tn.
I have no further information on James other than he is suppose to buried at the head of a creek in Lee or Scott (close to Lee) County Virginia. He is on the 1900 Hancock Co. Tn and 1910, 1920 and 1930 Rocky Station Lee Co, VA census'. On the census' he gives his birthplace as Tennessee and his parents birthplace TN. I have not been able to locate his death certificate as I had someone unsucessfully search for me at a library in Richmond.
Cinthia is listed as born in Tn. on the census'. I know she died on/about March 24/25, 1955 in either Lee (or Scott) County Virginia -"with her people"- a quote from a great aunt but I know not where. It would appear they are not buried together. Cinthia's had at least two brothers Barnum (also spelt over the years as Branum,Branam, Branem, Branham,Branam) and and Patterson (Pat). Possible two younger brothers named John and Landon, and a sister Mary E. and another sister or very close cousin named Angelina- Angelina and Landon are living with Cinthia and James on the 1900 census for Hancock County, TN. John is living with Patterson.
I have found Cinithia on the 1880 census and Angelina is not in the family and should be IF her birthday is correct on the 1900 census.
On the 1800 census the family consist of W. Collins, Mariam wife, Cinthia dau, Barnum son, and Mary E. dau. Age 1. I do not know what the W. stands for, and I wonder if the Mariam could be Mary Ann.
Hester Gibson may also be an important person, she is listed as the midwife on my grandmothers birth certficiate.
I need help in locating James and his parents on ealier census' or other records and in deciphering the information I have on Cinthia's parents. The family story has always been that Cinthia was a full blood Cherokee so I suspect at this she is Melungeon. They are always listed as white on the census' I have found.
