Ed,
I own a copy of the book "Christ Church" published in 2001 for the Foundation for Historic Christ Church. There were two Christ Church buildings, both located on the Corotoman and on Carter land.
Page 7-8:
"The present magnificent church structure, built in the 1730s, is the second church at this site. In 1665 the vestry ordered the first church to be built. The undertaker (building contractor) was John Carter..........
the exact location of the 1670 church has long been a matter of speculation. A preliminary archaeological study, undertaken in 1999, unearthed artifacts & shards in an area to the northeast of the present church near the brick wall."

The second church was begun by Robert Carter. On page 8, it states from Robert Carter's diary that he intended to build a new church next to the first church on his land at Corotoman. They believe the building started probably in 1730. He died in 1732, before it was completed. They believe the first services were conducted in this new second church in 1735.
