Thanks for your post, William. Another kind person already sent her will to me, and I have determined that she is not the Mary Phillips that I was hoping she would turn out to be. She did indeed mention a Will Hathaway as her godson in her will, as well as a Thomas Cox. I have been told that the word godson was sometimes used interchangeably with the word grandson back in those days, but I don't know if that is true. In her will Mary also mentions her son John Wallace (also spelled Jon Wallis) several times, indicating that she was married at least twice, first to a man named Wallace and second to a man named Phipps. For the benefit of other researchers I will post the will of Mary Phipps which I have transcribed to the best of my ability as follows: In the name of God amen. The Last will and Testam’t of Mary Phipps widow of ye Parish of Christ Church in the County of Lancaster Virginia who being sicke & weak of body but of good sound and Perfect memory Thanks be to God do make and appoint This to be my Last will and Testam’t. Item. I do bequeath my soul to almighty God who gave it to me and my Body to be buried in decent manner but not to receive a sermon. First I will that all my just and honest Debts and funeral Charges and all other Charges be paid and discharged. Item. I give and bequeath unto John Bradley for the Trouble he has been at in my sickness Two Cows named Cherry and Blossom and their calves that now sucks them and three barells of Indian Corn to be taken out of my Loft and a small Iron pott and half of Indian Corn when it comes into harvest that is now growing in my Corn field sd Bradley being at half of ye Charge from ye debt hereof toward the cutting and bringing ye sd Corn into ye house. Item. I give and bequeath unto Thomas Cox his wife a (gown?) and (petticoat?) of striped ___. Item. I give and bequeath unto Thos Cox his son that ___ is my Godson a black yearling heifer. Item. I give and bequeath unto Will Hathaway my Godson one heifer of Three years old and Three books (viz) The whole Duty of man The sermon on the mount and Psalter. Item. I doe assign over Eliz: Hall unto my beloved Friend Amy Palmer and to her assigns the full time and Term that I have in her by Indenture the said Palmer doing for ye sd Eliz as her Indenture doth Express. Item. I give and bequeath unto Eliz Hall one Cow named Princess and her Calf my middle Iron pott Two single Irons, one Large spinning wheel Two pair of wooll Cards Two books (viz) a Testam’t and Common Prayor book and a Red Gilded Leather Trunk all this to be delivered to my Friend Amy Palmer at my Decease and I give more unto ye sd Eliz: Hall one sett of woolon Clouths at ye End of her Indented Time. Item. I doe assign over Ellinor Hull unto Rich’d Garret and Mary his wife and Their assign the full Time and Term I have in her by indenture The said Richard and Mary doing for ye sd Ellinor as her Indenture doth Express. Item. I give and bequeath unto Elinor Hall one cow named Scar and her Calf and a small brass kittle This to be Delivered to Richard and Mary Garret at my Decease. Item. I give and bequeath more unto the said Elinor Hull Two pewter dishes and one sett of woolling Clouths at the End of her Indentured Time. Item. I give and bequeath more unto Eliz. Hall and Ellinor Hull her sister all my wearing Linen to be divided at ye End of their Indentured Time. Item. I lone unto John Bradly my _____ moulds during his Life time in case my son Jon Wallis doth not Come to demand them but if he doth Then I order the sd Jon Bradly to deliver them unto him otherwise to be Returned to my Estate at his decease. Item. All ye Rest and Residue of my Estate whatsoever I doe give and bequeath unto my Loving son John Wallace and his heirs for Ever whom I appoint my Executor but in case my son John should die before he hears of my Death Then what should have Come to my son John Wallace I give and bequeath unto Eliz. and Ellinor Hull her sister at the End of their Indentured Time and in Case they die before their Indentured Time be Expired then I give and bequeath both what they and my son should have unto Priscilla Palmer and her heirs for Ever. Item. My will farther is that my (honorable?) Friend Richard Chechester Esq ___ This my Last will and Testam’t to be proved and to give my son John Wallace ___ thereof by ye first opportunity after my decease and also that ye sd Chechester do take my whole Estate in his hand and dispose of it according to this my Last will In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal This Twelfth day of June one Thousand seven hundred and nine and in the Eighth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Anne Queen of Great Brittan France and Ireland Queen Defender of ye Faith ano Dom 1709.
