Greetings! I'm hoping to get in touch with descendants of Dr. Richard Henry Stuart (1807-1889) and his wife Julia Calvert Stuart (1814-1888), owners of "Cedar Grove", "Cleydael" and various other properties in and around King George County.
We recently bought Cleydael and have become interested in the Stuart family. So much emphasis is placed on the house's connection with Booth's escape route, that little has been written about the Stuart family themselves, which is a shame as they were fascinating people, connected to the Washingtons, the Lees, the Custises, the Calverts, and many other early families in Virginia and Maryland.
Are there any Stuart descendants out there that might have 19th or early 20th c. pictures of Cleydael. The earliest picture of Cleydael I've seen was the photograph taken during the 1937 WPA historic buildings survey and a very sketchy line drawing from a ca. 1880's - 90's magazine article. Among other things, we're attempting to date the barn and determine the location of outbuildings (summer kitchen, etc) no longer surviving.
By the same token, it would be wonderful if we could track down early photographs of the Stuarts or their children.
The only pictures of anyone in the family I've seen are pictures of the Thomas Sully paintings of Dr. and Mrs. Stuart.
I am also wondering if there are any surviving letters / memoirs / diaries, particularly from the Civil War era. Dr. Stuart appears to have played a major role in the Confederate supply route getting much-needed medicines into Virginia from Maryland and Washington, and was twice imprisoned for his efforts. This is an area that deserves research.
Of the Stuart's eight children, five married and had issue:
ROSALIE EUGENIA STUART, b. 1835; d. 1915; m. SHOLTO TURBERVILLE STUART, 1859 (her cousin, inherited Cedar Grove
MARGARET STUART, b. 1837; m. ROBERT M. (WATERMAN?) HUNTER, 1865
JULIA CALVERT STUART, b. 1839; d. 1861; m. EUSEBIUS LEE JONES, May 23, 1860. (one son, b. 1861)
ADA STUART, b. 1842, Cedar Grove; d. April 1914, Cleydael, King George County VA (?); m. (1) WILLIAM WELLFORD RANDOLPH, September 09, 1863, King George County; m. (2) ROBERT LIGHTFOOT ROBB, 1882. (inherited Cleydael)
CAROLINE CALVERT STUART, b. 1844; d. 1872, m. FREDERICK WILLIAM MACKAY HOLLIDAY, 1871 (one child, b. 1872)
Any descendants out there?
