King and Queen Co. Land Records

I have a question to anyone that may understand Virginia land records, in King and Queen Co. land records,
(Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. II, King and Queen Co. Records concerning 18th century persons (Originally published as vol. 4 of Virginia Colonial Abstracts), Beverly Fleet, pp. 137 ff., Ancestry.com
(http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/BookView.aspx?dbid=48430&iid=VAColonialAbstractsII-004856-137&sid=&gskw=),I discovered several possible ancestors listed as owning land in King and Queen Co. in 1782. Is it possible that these persons were listed as owners of property but did not actually live on this land or were even deceased? A George Durham was an ancestor but died in Brunswick Co VA in 1766.
