Book: Official Guide to Colonial Wmsbrg. published by the Colonial Wmsbrg Foundation

"The desire to design a completely new city complemented one of the motives for moving the capital from Jamestown. In all probabbility, Governor Nicholson took the initiative for the new design. He had successfully planned Annapolis when he was governor of Maryland, and he was well versed in the latest principles of urban planning. The town plan of Williamsburg reflected those principles. Several important physical landmarks were central to Nicholson's plan and are still extant."
