Almon (and its variants) Research
Posted by: Timothy Ray Allman Date: December 06, 2001 at 20:24:32
  of 1389

I went to the Fairfax County, Virginia Library and thought it would be nice to post what I have discovered from the Isle of Wight County, Virginia, books as shown below (Page Numbers of where the information was found is located at the end of this message. There is a wealth of information to be gleaned from the Library to help validate one's research. I hope this helps someone make that special connection in his or her family history. The one thing I found most prevalent is that there are too many ways to spell the Almon or Allman or Almand etc. name.... I worked on this about six hours on a laptop typing...well hunt and peck is more like it, I did try to proof read the best that I could and I do apoligize in advance for a typos you may find...you get the picture...Please forgive the spelling errors on my behalf, I tried type what I read in the books. Please feel free to contribute or add to this work. I have no further information than what it is you find in this article.

There was an abundance of information on surnames Rand, Diver, Morrison and Harrison, however, I focused on the surname Almon and the many variations found.

*A Matross is a soldier who assists artillery gunners in loading, firing, sponging and moving the guns. There were many of these men encamped at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78 and were "retrained" with the arrival of von Steuben. While certainly not a glamorous role, it was very essential!
