Book: IOW Deed book 8 1747-1752
1 June 1751....Petition of Thomas Whitfield and wife, Mary Whitfield and John Chapman and wife, Jordan Champan...petition to divide inherited land whereas William Harrison late of IOW decd. , died siezed of 1,000 acres in Newport Parish which was willed to said Harrison by William Bressie on 9 June 1701. Mary Whitfield and Jordan Chapman were said Harrison's coheirs. Whitfield is to receive the upper part and Chapman is to receive the lower part of the land. Recorded 6 June 1751.
(Sounds like Thomas married Mary Harrison, dau of William. I assume they had son Harrison Whitfield.)

Thomas is a member of the General Assembly from IOW county 1798-1799. He dies during this tenure as he is replaced because of death.
Matthew Whitfield, named on list of prisoners taken in arms, on parole, Portsmouth, April 12, 1781. Date of parole, Jan 16, 1781, Matw Whitfield from IOW, Carpenter, age 45.

At a court held May 4th, 1775, Arthur Smith, Captain, Willis Wills, Capt. and Harrison Whitfield, Lieutenant of the Militia of this county, severally took the Oaths to, &c.
At a court held May 1, 1777, Ordered that Harrison Whitfield be appointed a Lieutenant to the said Company.
Priscilla Lawrence married Matthew Whitfield according to IOW Deed book 1704-1715 page 115 dated 1708. Their children were Elizabeth who married John Smith and William who married Elizabeth Goodman in Chowan Co NC, 1713, then settled in Bertie then moved to Rockford, Lenoir Co. They had 11 children.
Maybe you can glean some valuable clues from all of this.
