Thank you for your information. William Mathis/Mathews/Matthews has truly been my brick wall. We know he was in IOW at one point but just can't seem to pin him down. I am going there this fall to do so research. Perhaps he will finally decide to give me a glimmer to work on <g> Unless he totally broke from the established naming practices of the era, none of the names you listed follow down this line I am researching. William's middle name may have been Washington as his son is William Washington Mathis II. <sigh!>
