Mystery solved About Robert Webb of Isle of Wight and Surry 1692
Posted by: Bob Lamb (ID *****3225) Date: August 05, 2010 at 07:24:17
  of 1389

I ordered this book about the tithables in Surry Co., VA, in the late 1600s. I wanted to confirm what I saw on this website below.

http://books.google.com/books?id=Tv7Df5v2xgcC&pg=PA143&lpg=PA143&dq=%22Robt+Webb%22+%22surry%22&source=bl&ots=mHy_7OWVg7&sig=QM56afgDDbGPJ_TAEAjOdQPgP6M&hl=en&ei=c7FATJCrMMf5nAfsgqH-Dw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CBoQ6AEwBg#v=onepage&q=%22Robt%20Webb%22%20%22surry%22&f=false
Surry County [Virginia] Tithables, 1668-1703

By Edgar MacDonald, Richard Slatten

From the list of tithables above the upper Sunken Marsh
by John Warren

1692
Tho. Bently, Jo: Robt. Webb, an a negro man - 3

The ten names above Robert Webb in 1692 were:

1. William Hunt and Robert Cartright
2. Humphrey Phelps
3. John Wilkinson and George Rachell
4. Thomas Adkins
5. John Harris
6. Robert Nicholson and Robert Lanier
7. Thomas and Jeffery Busby, and George Peters
8. Richard Greene
9. John Rawlings, Richard Shockey, and William Scarbrough

The ten names following Jo: Robt. Webb in 1692 were:

1. Hezekiah Bunnell
2. Thomas Sidway
3. Thomas Hux
4. Thomas Battle
5. Edward Scarbrough
6. William Holsworth and Robert Dowling
7. Henry and Samuel Briggs
8. Thomas Wiggins
9. Nathiel and William Davis and John Collier
10. Robert Austin
11. Richard Washington
12. Richard Parker and John Kersey
13. John Rivers
14. Timothy Ezell and Thomas Avery
15. John King and William Hillier

To my shock, the above reference was not in the index for Robt. Webb. But I knew I couldn't have imagined that, so I began skimming the lists for 1692 -- and there it was. But it wasn't shown in the index for Webb! Perhaps that's why people have missed this important clue for so many years!

Here, again, is what it shows.

============================================================

Thomas Bently is shown with three tithables.

One is himself, of course.
One is Robt. Webb.
The third is "a negro man."

Now, look at the Jo: in front of Robt. One might presume that to be the name of the negro man. It's not. Jo: was the abbreviation for Joseph. In all the lists where a name is abbreviated a colon is used like that. Jo: is the first name of Robert Webb. He was Joseph Robert Webb. His father called him Joseph in his will. Now..... do you know who he was? He belongs with the family I have always suspected he belonged to on the line between Isle of Wight and Surry Co., VA. At some point he dropped the Jo: and was known only as Robert.
