JOHN CORNELIUS THOMAS - farmer and merchant, is owner of considerable landed estate in Isle of Wight county. He has 400 acres of land on the Smithfield road, one-half under cultivation, 500 acres in a second tract of land, 50 acres in a third, and a fourth of 15 acres. He is also proprietor of the hotel at Zuni, in Isle of Wight county. He was born in this county, August 22, 1825, and here his wedded life began, on the 22d of May, 1860. His wife is Kerenhapper, daughter of Josiah and Mary Gay, and the children of their union are six, born: John Walter, April 14, 1861; William J., November 4, 1864; James A, March 3, 1867; Laura M, September 10, 1870; Mary E., October 24, 1874; Ivy K., November 22, 1877. The wife of Mr. Thomas was born in Isle of Wight county, on Christmas Day, 1849. His father was William J. Thomas, who died November 4, 1872, and his mother, Cherry (Moddy) Thomas, died November 17, 8106, in her sixty-nineth year. A.W. Thomas brother of John C., enlisted in 1862, in the "Isle of Wight Grays," and died in Richmond on the 9th day of July, 1864. John C. Thomas served several years as magistrate of Isle of Wight county, and he was ten years postmaster in the county. His postoffice address is Smithfield, Isle of Wight county, Virginia.
