The John Rowland who died in Henry Co., VA., 1780, seems to have died childless. His legatees were:
(1). Wife Mary.
(2). Brother Michael's sons William and Michael.
(3). Brother George.
(4). John Palfree.
(5.) Phillip Ryan's wife Obedience.
(6). Gilbert Rowland's two sons George, Jr. and William.
(7). Garland Akin.
(8.) Joshua Bowles' 2 sons.
(9.) Mary Isham.

The names mentioned as legatees lead me to believe that this John Rowland was a son of Andrew Rowland and Ruth Norman. Comments on the legatees:

(1.) Wife Mary- A legacy of 200 pounds annually. Nothing is said about children and provision for them.
(2.) Brother Michael's sons William and Michael. The Michael Rowland who was son of Andrew Rowland and Ruth Norman married Elizabeth Hairston, daughter of Robert Hairston and Ruth Stovall, and had children George, Michael, Robert, William, Elizabeth H., Martha H., Creed T., Peter H., and Rebecca Jane Rowland. Perhaps William and Michael were the only children born prior to 1780, as no others are mentioned.
(3). Brother George- A tract of land.
(4.) John Palfree- John Rowland's right to a survey where Palfree now lives.
(5). Phillip Ryan's wife Obedience- one slave girl Phillis. Andrew Rowland and Ruth Norman had a daughter Obedience who married Phillip Ryan. She would have been a sister of John Rowland who died 1780.
(6). Gilbert Rowland's sons George, Jr. and William, one-sixth part of the proceeds of his estate. Gilbert would have been a brother of John Rowland, died 1780.
(7). Garland Akin, relationship to John Rowland unknown, but John thought enough of him to give him one-half of his estate. Garland later is in Cumberland Co., KY. by 1810.
(8). Joshua Bowles' two sons. Sarah Rowland, daughter of Andrew Rowland and Ruth Norman, married Joshua Bowles, so she would have been a sister of the John Rowland who died, 1780.
(9). Mary Isham- This would be John Rowland's sister who married James Isham.

If Garland Akin died without issue, the estate was to revert to the brothers and sisters of John Rowland.

Baldwin Rowland is mentioned as one of the witnesses. This John Rowland had a brother Baldwin, the youngest child of the family. He was not named as a legatee of the estate.

Was this John Rowland the same person whose estate was still being settled as late as 1812-1816?
