I have long been chasing what are possibly father and son -- both named ABRAHAM FRANKLIN. My GGGgrandfather was BIRD FRANKLIN, b. 1806 in Surry County, NC and died in (my home county) Letcher County, KY in 1890. His father was ABRAHAM FRANKLIN (who drops out of public records by 1820), and his mother was SARAH "SALLY" SPEARS. Sally was in Floyd County, KY in 1820 with her oldest son, Abel, but back in Russell County, VA with Bird and his brother Shadrack later.
There has been much “mythology” that this Abraham was born in Philadelphia in 1753 (and even that he died in 1845), but no one comes forth with documentation. And the same sources claim there was another wife, LUCILLE VAUGHAN, but no one has come forth with source documents.
I have found records for Abraham Franklin of Henry County (tax list, 1779; oaths of allegiance; 1782 claim for expropriation of a horse by the military, etc.). Others taking the oath of allegiance at the same times were Isham ISHAM HALL, AMBROSE MULLINS, JESSE HALL, Lanceford/Lansford Hall, and others. The children of Isham Hall and of my Bird, Shadrack, and Abel Franklin families intermarried and followed the same timetables/pathways of migration further west – through Scott, Russell (later Wise) Counties, and into KY.
I am convinced that, at best, the Abraham who married Lucille Vaughan was possibly the father of Abraham who married Sally Spears; in turn, they were the parents of Abel (1797), Bird (1806), Shadrach (1810-12), and possibly other children.
I’m trying to weave all these southside/southwest VA and eastern KY Franklins together. Can anyone help me? Does anyone have much specific info on the Abraham Franklin who showed up so much in Rev. War era court records in Henry County?
