Thomas & William Edwards, Henrico County, VA, 1716

Who were the Thomas & William Edwards listed in the following deed? The deed indicates that Thomas Edwards, of Charles City County, VA, was deceased by 1716 and his widow (first name not given) had remarried Thomas Harwood of Henrico County, VA. Thomas’ two sons are listed as William and Thomas (not of age in 1716). When William & Thomas Edwards signed this deed, they both used the first initial of their first name, which does indicate they could at least write some letters, otherwise, they would have just used an “X” when signing their names.

Was William the William Edwards, who married Elizabeth Brazeale about 1720, daughter of Henry Brazeale of Henrico County, VA and who left a will in Bedford County, VA, proved in May 1757? When William signed his will, he used a “W” mark, which could indicate he was the same person.

Was Thomas the Thomas Edwards, who married Martha and died in Lunenburg County, VA in 1751? Thomas used the “TE” mark on his land deeds and his will, which gives further reason to suspect that he was the same Thomas who signed the 1716 deed.

“Henrico County, Virginia Deeds, 1706-1737", Benjamin B. Weisiger, III, 1985
pg. 54 (pg. 132) Bond of William Edwards of Henrico Co., who declares himself indebted to Thomas Harwood for 50 lbs., the reason being that by the appraisement and inventory of Thomas Edwards, dec’d, of Charles City Co., father of the above William, there is a division to be made of the dec’d’s estate among his two children and his widow, who married the above Thomas Harwood, the other so being named Thomas Edwards and not yet of full age. As Thomas Harwood caused to be conveyed to said William by Thomas Pleasants 530 acres of land, said William doth quit claim to his share of his father’s estate and will pay his brother Thomas Edwards his share of the estate. Dated ____ 1716 Wit: John Watson, Obadiah (OS) Smith
signed: William (W) Edwards, Thomas (T) Edwards Recorded 7 Jan 1716

I’m a descendant of Thomas Edwards, d. 1751 and would be interested in hearing from descendants of both Thomas and William. Several descendants of Thomas Edwards have had DNA testing, and so far, the only matches have been with other known descendants. It could be very helpful to find a descendant of William Edwards who would be willing to have DNA testing to see if these two lines do match.
