Transcriptions of court documents in Halifax Co., VA regarding the descendants of James Hunt & his wife Rhoda Nunnalee --

To the worshipful court of Halifax County in (illegible) Chancery sitting.

Humbly complaining (illegible) unto your worship (illegible & missing words) your orator and oratrix Allen Parish & Frances his wife, formerly Frances Hunt. That James Hunt decíd late of Halifax County died intestate seized of a tract of land in (illegible) said co. on the back water of Childry Creek continuing about 370 acres by old servies. That he left his wife Rhoda Hunt who is yet living and ten children to wit: Spencer Hunt, who now resides in the state of Tennessee, Elisabeth, who married Willis Jones & has since died, leaving the following children: James, Henry Susan & Louisa, all of whom are yet under 21 years of age, Frances Hunt, your oratrix who married your orator Allen Parish, Nancy, Lucy who also married the said Willis Jones after the death of his first wife, Edward who resides in Tennessee, Susannah (who is an idiot), Daníl Hunt (in Tennessee), Mamucan & Matilda. That your orator Allen Parish has purchased the interest in this said land of Edward Hunt, Daniel Hunt and the parts to which Willis Jones would have been entitled by virtue of his marriage with the two daughters above named as will appear by clear title lands herewith exhibited marked A. B. C. I prayed to be taken as a part of this Bill. That your orator & oratrix wish a division of the said land but the widow & remaining heirs will not consent to such a division unless it is made under the device of some court of complaint jurisdicition. In (illegible words) whiereof & inasmuch as (illegible words) at law and only relievable in equity where matters of this (illegible) and recognizable. To this and therefore that a division may be had your orator & oratrix pray that the said Rhoda Hunt, Spencer Hunt, James Jones, Henry Jones, Susan Jones and Louisa Jones who are infants under 21 years of age, Nancy Hunt, Willis Jones & Lucy his wife formerly Lucy Hunt, Edward Hunt, Susannah Hunt who is an idiot, Daníl Hunt, Mamucan Hunt & Matilda Hunt may be made defendants to this bill & compelled to assent all this allegations (illegible) of (illegible) corporal ooaths fully and (illegible). That the court may decree a division of the said land according to the respective rights of the parties. And finally may it please the court to grant such other and further relief to your orator & oratrix as may seem right and grant the (illegible wordsÖ.). /s/ Robt book for plffs

This cause this day came unto the Land on the bill (illegible) of the resident defendants (illegible) in and was adjudged by counsel. And the court being satisfied that this order of publication (illegible words) in this cause has been duly published and posted at the front door of the court House of this county upon consideration whereof the court doth adjudge order & decree that Harbard Nunnalee, Peter Ric?, Richíd Thornton & Thoís Maribee or any three of them who (illegible) approved (illegible) for that purpose do proceed to divide this land in the bill mentioned into ten parts of equal value. That they assign five thereof to the said Allen Parish and Lucy his wife and one to Spencer Hunt, Nancy Hunt, Susannah Hunt, Mamucan Hunt and Matilda Hunt each and report thereof to this court in order to a final decree.

The separate answer of Rhoda Hunt to the bill of complaint exhibited against herself and others in the county court of Halifax by Allen Parish and Lucy his wife.

This respondent (illegible) and says that she is by entitled to dower (illegible words) the bill mentioned but that she does not intend claiming the same and wishes this court to decree division of the full (illegible) or (illegible words) her children and their descendants according to their respective rights. Having fully ansíd the (illegible words) with cost.

The joint answer of Willis Jones (who is guardian of (illegible) of James, Henry, Susan & Louisa Jones and (illegible) of Susannah Hunt), Nancy Hunt. Willis Jones (in his own right) and Lucy his wife, Mamucan Hunt & Matilda Hunt to the bill of complaint exhibited against themselves and others. This in the County Court of Halifax by Allen Parish & wife. These respondents sa[y]ing and ansíd and day that they admit the allegations of the complaintbill to (illegible words) no objection to the courts degreeing the prayer Parish & wf of the gill. Therse respondents having fully answered pray to be (illegible words).

The joint answer of Spencer Hunt, James, Henry, Susannah & Louisa Jones, Nancy Hunt, Willis Jones & Lucy his wife formerly Lucy Hunt, Edward Hunt, Susannah Hunt, Daníl Hunt, Mamucan Hunt, Matilda Hunt and Rhoda Hunt to the bill of complaint exhibited against them in the County court of Halifax by Allen Parish & wife. These defts saying & answer and say that they admit the allegations af the complít bill to be true and have no objection to the decree prayed for. Having fully answered they pary to be hence dismissed with their costs.

I have been researching the Memican/Memucan/et al variants of this name. Memican Hunt married Frances G. Cook.She was d/o Jarrett Walthall Cook & Elizabeth Carter. This Cook branch moved from Halifax Co., VA to Green Co., KY about 1830ish. Any connections/additions/corrections to this line, please contact me. Thanks.
