I am posting this in hopes of finding company in my search for the family of Leonard Keeling. I descend from his daughter Nancy who married William Scates. Jane

KEELING, Elizabeth - Edgefield District, S C

Know all men by these presents that I, Elizabeth Keeling, daughter of Edmund Keeling, aged 22, now a resident of Edgefield District, South Carolina, do appoint my friend Edward B. Fowlkes of Charlotte County, State of Virginia, my lawful attorney…to receive all monies and property due to me in the last will and testament of my grandfather Edward Keeling, deceased of Charlotte County, VA.

Edmund Keeling appeared before the Court of the state and district aforesaid and made affidavit that the Elizabeth Keeling (who executed the foregoing power of attorney) is the only child he had by that name and is the one alluded to in the will of Edward Keeling, deceased, of Charlotte County, Virginia. Dated 3 Jan 1820, Recorded 7 Feb. 1820. Ref. Charlotte County Deed Book 15, page 217.

NAMES: Wife – Elizabeth Keeling; Son – Edmund Keeling, Jr.; Daughters – Fanny Sullivant, Mary Hall; Granddaughter – Elizabeth Keeling, daughter of Edmund Keeling, Jr., Grandsons – Walker Keeling and Joseph Keeling, sons of Leonard Keeling, deceased. Bequests to Patsy Keeling and Elizabeth Woodard (connection not stated) Executors: William L. Morton and William Towler. Dated 30 Sept 1806, Recorded 3 May 1819. Reference: Charlotte County Will Book 5, page 11.

[I take it that this Leonard Keeling was the son of Edward Keeling and father of Walker and Joseph Keeling.]

 July 1778 – Witnessed will of William Lax
 18 Apr 1783 – appeared as witness of will of William Lax [Halifax co Will Book I, #432]
 Sept 1758 – LUNENBERG co VA – Leonard Keeling awarded 17s for either militia service OR providing provisions. Hening’s Statutes, p 223 [different Leonard?]
 From Halifax co Deeds 1775-1778, p 45. Page 345 of original Will Book. To Wm Morton, Wm Hubard, Thos Carter and Joel Watkins of CHARLOTTE co – Leonard Keeling sold land in Halifax, Deed dated 7 Aug 1775, these men asked to visit his wife USSLEY to gain her relinq. of dower – it was reported “done” 14 Nov 1777.
 Halifax County Deeds 1775 – 1778 from TLC pub co – p. 57, Aug 7, 1775, from Leonard Keeling of H, to James Johnstone of H, for 100£, 5 shillings, all that tract in H on the branches of Miry Cr., abt 300 acres according to patent, and bounded by Farmer, Atkins, Terry, Williams. Signed – Leonard Keeling. Wit – Walter Robertson, James Calland, Nimrod Farguson. Rec Mar 21, 1776.

From Halifax co Deed Book 11, p 275 – Field Prewit – m. Mary Burk , daughter of Elizabeth Keeling, wife of Patrick Burk. Quit claim wife’s right to any part of her mothers’ estate now in possession of Solomon King. Released rithe to William Burk of King William county for £25. Signed – Field [X] Pruett and Mary [X] Pruett. Witt. Thos Hughes, Chas [his mark] Mullin, and Ann Mullin Recorded 20 May 1779

SO: Leonard Keeling had wife USSLEY, his mother was Margaret ? Keeling-Spenser

The lists of children are speculation. Some of them give Leonard Keeling as father.
