Nancy, can't help you, but you might be able to help yourself. Both the LDS Family History Library and the Library of Virginia have personal property tax records for Halifax County (and other Va counties) from about 1788 on. This was an annual tax, so there's lots of information there. Males over the age of 16 are at least counted by the head of household, and may be individually identified. the FHL has branches everywhere. If they were in the county, you'll find out a lot about what they owned, which is interesting, and you can get clues about how old people are, when they arrived, and when they died.
