I greatly appreciate your response to my message, Kim!
I recently found Sutherlin, VA on the map. My hubby and I plan to trace our family's footsteps in the Spring and Sutherlin is on our travel agenda, for sure! I am so anxious to visit the area!
There were a number of Sutherlands in Pittsylvania Co. who changed the spelling of the name to Sutherlin. Some lived in Halifax and some in Pittsylvania counties. (And all three spellings of the name are used-just to confuse us genealogists, I'm sure. :-)
I have also found a Sutherland, VA near Petersburg.
Are you aware of a Peytonsburg, VA? It is in one or the other of those two counties.
I am guessing Sutherlin VA may have been named for William T. Sutherlin who was a tobacco manufacturer and who built a mansion in Danville if my memory serves me correctly. It is still standing and in good repair and being used for a museum, I believe. I am trying to learn all I can before our trip so that we won't waste time.

You are most thoughtful to respond to the message with the information.
With gratitude,
Martha
