Hi Leon and others: You refer to Michael Bruce as Michael D. Bruce. Is he the same as the one referred to as only Michael Bruce? You do not mention my John as a member of your family. In 1760 both Michael and John were to assist in the opening of a bridle way from Green's house to Difficult church. So they must have lived close to one another..and that was very close to my ancestor, Benjamin Hall, whose grandson, James H. Hall married Rachael Bruce, the grand daughter of John Bruce.
Aug. Court 1767 John Brewis aand James Brewis of Halifax become special bail for defendant )Henry Owen) in law suit.
Again in 1772 both Michael and John ordered to work on the same road together. These items from the Halifax Co. Book of Pleas and Orders.
Here is a quote from a Bruce researcher who did more than I did, He also is an atty. who can understand all the legal entries. "I am quite confident that they (John, James, Michael & Robert) were related as first cousin's. John Sr. and Michael lived in western Halifax and Robert and James lived in eastern Pittsylvania. These four are brothers. John Bruce Jr. is the son of John, Sr. James (m. Tabitha) Bruce is most likely the son of James, but possibly the son of Robert. I have recently started working on court orders and have found evidence of a fifth brother Thomas Bruce that died without heirs!"
The above is only a sampling of the records I have on Michael, John and James Bruce.
Could you share some of your records...maybe there are some I have missed. Thanks, Grace Hall Upshaw
