Enid, your Martins took much the same path as did my Scotts going from the Orange/Spotsylvania Cos., VA area to Wayne Co., KY at about the same time. As a matter of fact my Wm. Scott, b. ca. 1755, d. post 1730 Wayne Co., KY, would have been right about the same age as your John Martin. Not only did they come from essentially the same area and take the same path, but I am convinced that somewhere along the way there were numerous Scott-Martin marriages, as the name is too prominent in my Scott family for this not to be the case. A son of Wm. Scott, ca. 1755-1830 ended up in Yell Co., AR where 2 granddaughters married Martin men (James E. Martin and Isaac Newton Martin) and one grandson was named Samuel Martin Scott.
I know that Wm. Scott, b. 1755 m. a dau. of Thomas Ayers of Pittsylvania, Halifax, and Patrick Cos., VA, though at the time of their marriage, they were probably living in Surry Co., NC. Her given name is unknown. His son, Wm. Scott, b. 1782, m. Celia Conn 1809 Wayne Co.; she was a dau. of James Madison Conn. The only Scott-Martin marriage I have come across to date is that of James Scott and Lydia Martin 1759 Rowan Co., NC, and I have no idea who this couple is. Assuming this is a first marriage, James would be of the age to be possibly an uncle to my Wm. Scott, b. ca. 1755, but that doesn't appear to be the case. You can read more on my Scott line on the Scott Forum #15224.
Do you have any information about a connection between the Scotts and Martins, other than being neighbors in Wayne Co., KY? if so, I would so appreciate hearing from you.KRB
