Walter Jackson Moorefield was born 9-7-1885 and died on 10-24-1916, resuting from an auto accident. He is buried in the Moorefield-Hodnett cemetery on land his grandfather, James R. Moorefield owned. This property is about fifteen miles west of the town of Halifax on Rte. 360, about a mile into Pitsylvania County. The above dates are from his headstone. He and Sarah Blanche Stephens were married in Halifax Co. on 12-15-1902. She was the daughter of Thomas and Rosa Stephens and was born on 7-25-1882. She died on 11-15-1960 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery near Scottsburg. I think that at the time of her death, the farm containing the family plot was no longer in the family.
Their children were:
Eugene Jackson, Irvin McDaniel, Elwood Emmitte(his son Elwood, Jr., lives in Brookneal), Winnie Dorsette, Cassie Christine, and Rosa Lee.
Walter was son of Jordan W. and Susan Ann Henderson Moorefield. Jordan was son of James R. and Amanda C. Lewis Moorefield. James R. was a son of Wiley and Cary Vaughn Moorefield. Wiley and Cary lived on a farm on the Keeling Road about three miles south of James and Amanda (Mandy). Cary had inherited this farm from her mother's father. I feel sure that there are two old headstones in the Moorefield Hodnett cemetery that contain the remains of Wiley and Cary. Both stones were marked, but the letters have eroded until they are no longer readable; however one has only four letters, the third appearing to be the letter "R" for Cary.
My opinion is that Wiley was a son of Moore Moorefield of Halifax County, but that is just my opinion; I don't know much about this family.
