I'm from Halifax County, and I've never heard Grand Oaks referred to as a plantation home, but here is some basic data that may help you. The home is located on Mountain Road (old route 360), which actually in the town of Halifax. Mountain Road is a wonderful drive of older stately homes in the county. Most were built in the 1800s. Mountain Road is directly behind the county courthouse for Halifax County. The description below is from www.oldhalifax.com I hope that this helps...
"230 Mountain Road, Grand Oaks
Across the street from St. John's Episcopal Church, Grand Oaks was also built by Dabney Cosby. It is an 1820 style home, but was later renovated to Colonial Revival.
It has magnificent grounds with boxwoods and old growth trees. It was purchased from the Holt family by Colonel Vaughn of Philadelphia, who came here to build the hydroelectric dam on the Banister River and kept this place for the summer. Colonel Vaughn renovated the home."
