Checked in a reference book I have of Grayson County, Va., done by the Grayson Historical Society, and found the following with regards to your J.J.L. Sherwood in an article written about Oak Hill Academy:
". . .one of the earliest Missionary Baptist ministers in Grayson Co., usually seen in records as J.J.L. Sherwood, became moderator of the New River Baptist Asso. and was instrumental in founding the Oak Hill Academy at Mouth of Wilson, Va."
It goes on to say that he was a teacher at the Academy.
Found JJL Sherwood in 1880 Grayson County census:
Sherwood, JJL 37 Minister
Sarah A. 33 Wife Keeping House
William M. 11 Son
Wiley 9 Son
Bina L. 7 Dau
C. Shadrach 4 Son
Arthur 2 Son
Edward 1 Son
Jane 76 M Keeping House
(Most likely Jane is JJL's mother) Any other identifying info? Will keep looking, Sarah A. may have been the daughter of Wiley Young for his household is in the census next to them, and JJL and Sarah named one of their sons Wiley.)
Hope this helps, please post here, and I'll post if I find anything else regarding your other questions. Good luck, Linda
