Thanks, it does help place the ferry location closer to the Galax end than the Independence end. "Island Ford Road" proper could perhaps have been on the east side of the river near Rock Creek. I think now, it's more likely it was incorporated into the secondary road that lies close to the river near Rock Creek. Apparently maintenance of the Island Ford Road was discontinued in the 1860's according to Grayson County Court Minutes on Jeff Weaver's site. Perhaps the County or State built a bridge somewhere close by, making the ford unnecessary. I'll keep an eye out for maps of Grayson in the late 19th century that might show a bridge across New River just south of the mouth of Rock Creek.
