Island Ford Road

Anyone know the (new ?) name for what had been called "Island Ford Road", at least through the 1870s. I am trying to pinpoint the location of Island Ford on New River, and modern topographical and road maps do not show this name. I believe it to lead to, or lie close by, New River, somewhere in the bend between Independence and the "new" highway bridge to Galax. It may now be a numbered (county or State) road.

My GGGG-grandfather John Welsh (Welch) petitioned the VA legislature in late 1790's to operate a ferry at Island Ford. I have been trying to learn the precise location of the road, as the "island" may have washed out long ago. Thanks for any insights.
