I too am a 7th generation descendent of Capt. William Long and Caty. Our family records have her maiden name as Surface. We are uncertain whether they met before he moved down from Augusta County or after. I have a genealogy acquaintance whose husband is a Surface and she seems to agree that Catherine (Caty)'s last name was Surface, but we have been unable to find her provenance. There was a Surface family in Augusta at the time William moved down.

I have more information on William's antecedents as well if you need it.
