Sarah Osborn would have been too young to have given birth to James Ward. She and James Ward SR. started having children around 1775 with Solomon. Then came, probably, Abby 1777 because we don't know her birthdate. They had Shadrack 1786, Sarah 1790, William 1792, Mary about 1794. There could have been children that died between 1777 and 1785 to explain that gap. But believing they got married and had James (JR?) in 1758 then had no more children from then until 1775 (a gap of 17 years) is not plausible. If Sarah gave birth to James at 15 she would have had Mary at 51. Not likely since she seems to have been in her prime child bearing years from 1775 - 1794. I have speculated that perhaps James SR was his father by a first wife who died explaining the gap in years. But that is just guessing. I think it very unlikely because I have reason to believe he knew his mother better than his father and that his father died when he was young. He says in his Rev. War application that he knows his birthdate, "according to his mother" which implies to me that he got his information most recently from his mother. Also, Solomon, Shadrack, William lived fairly close to each other near the home of James Sr. and Sarah. The other James Ward moved into another area several miles away. All in all, I don't believe he was their child. I still think he was connected to a family with names Wells, Nathan, William Ward
