Margaret [Maggie] COOPER is listed in the 1900 VA census in Giles Co as well. She is listed in the Pearisburg District with two sons in the household. Considering the width of time of the birth of these young fellows it may be that your Maggie may not have been the only wife [#2] to Lewis COOPER. Particular notes to this census is that both sons cite that their father was born in WV and we know the history of this state started in 1863. Early on after the war the census taker would make notes: "WV formerly VA" or "VA now WV". Keep in mind the possible listing of your Lewis as Louis by the census taker. Not unusual. Most likely you will find your Lewis COOPER may have served in the military during 1861-1865. If indeed your search goes to WV then be sure to look at both sides of the fence for the right Lewis. BTW we see that Margaret states she bore 6 children and 5 are living as of the 21 JUNE census. Getting back to the military notion keep in mind one Lewis COOPER who enlisted [date unknown at this time] in Co H of the 2nd WV Veterans Infantry. This particular unit was formed from two beat up regiments in 1864. Thus your Lewis may have earlier service in the other units that were formed in 1861. Notify Administrator about this message?
