In trying to figure out my Thomas David Wood my research hit the brick wall & for several years I haven't been able to connect him, but the Rev. Stephen Wood family all over him.
I have the Rev.'s wife as Anne Smith, married 4 Jun 1765 in Halifax (now Franklin) Co., VA. (I have not verified this)
1. Thomas Wood (1767-?) (Sarah "Sallie" Paisley)
2. Susannah "Susan" Wood (1776-?)(Moses "Mose" Greer)
3. Stephen Wood (III?) (1771-?)
4. Nancy Wood (1773-?) (Alexander Ferguson, Jr.)
5. Elizabeth "Betsy" Wood (1775-?) (Burwell Law)
6. Frances "Fannie" Wood (1777-?) (William Chambers)
7. Samuel Wood (1779-?) (Amanda Gish)
8. William Wood (1781-1786)
The only marriage I have is Susan - 4 Nov 1794 (I have not verified this)
The Wood's in Franklin Co. 1840:
1840 Franklin Co., VA Census:
Thomas Wood - 20-29 (<1815>)
Thomas Wood - 60-69 (<1775>)
Stephen Sr. - 50-59 (<1785>)
Wiley - - - - 50-59
Robert - - - 40-49 (<1795>)
Samuel - - - 40-49
George - - - 30-39 (<1805>)
Joseph Wood - 20-29 (<1815>)
Stephen Jr. - 20-29
The first Thomas Wood is my Thomas David Wood. Someone else claims him online but I dispute this as my Thomas married in 1838 in Botetourt Co. & had two little girls & were living in Franklin Co. 1840.
I cannot find Thomas in 1850, but he shows up again in 1860:
1860 Coopers P.O., Franklin Co., VA
Thomas D. Wood - 46 - 1814 - VA - Farmer
Frances F. - 37 - 1823 - VA
Samuel H. - 11 - 1849 - VA
He is in Pittsylvania Co. from then on.
Tom was from the Taylor's Store area of Franklin Co. A Stephen Wood, Jr. b. 1811 & w. Nancy T. Cabaniss b. 1815 also lived at Taylor's Store. Had to be related!
Thomas possibly brother of Louisa Wood Chaney (1818-1901).
In 1860 also in Coopers Store was Stephen S. Wood b. 1824 & wife Eliza Margaret Vineyard. From 1860 through 1900 Stephen was farming and living in Franklin Co., VA; in Cooper in 1860, and Gills Creek Twp. from 1870 to 1900. Stephen m. 2nd Elizabeth Unknown.
Stephen and Thomas had to be related? Def. not his son, they are 10 years apart.
In the above 1840 census, the Stephen Sr. could not have been the Rev. as the Rev was born abt. 1735 & the one in the census was born abt. 1785. So who was this Stephen, Sr.?
My Thomas couldn't be a son of the other Thomas as there is no Sr./Jr.
Who were these 1840 Wood's the sons of? Thomas, Stephen or Samuel?
Does anyone have access to "Some of Our Families: Stephen Wood, Sr." in Roanoke Public Library?
Any input greatly appreciated!
