I think Mary is correct and the name came from Algoma Region of Canada and that Sam named it after he married. There is a book about Franklin County written by someone named Goode that may have this material prior to 1900. It might at least give us the names of sites in the area prior to Sam's Marriage. Let me know if you find out anything.
