First of all I have no problems at all with the slavery issue, that era has passed, thank God. It was simply an ugly part of US history and because of it I am here today as a free American with all rights. Neither you nor I was responsible for this shame. It's good to hear that you do not approve. Now that we have the slavery issue resolved let us move forward and find our ancestoral lines.

Secondly, I descend from James Cannaday and Elizabeth Raikes (Rakes) and every single Cannaday you mentioned would have been in my line, some directly and others more indirectly.

Third, the correct spelling of this family line is CANNADAY as documented by land records, wills, and estate records. Although from time to time you can find it spelled in your version. This can vary from record to record. Remember, these records were orginally hand written. I have found some Cannadys that also descend from the CANNADAY line and they acknowledge that somehow the name is now mispelled or changed by someone before them for some unknown reason. It is still the name I bear today as do hundreds of other White and Black Cannadays.

So in fact, we are researching the same family tree only different branches.

I have almost 200 or more pages of information. Currently, this is a very busy time for me, as I have just launched a new business venture. This is what I can do, as time permits, I will forward you links and will scan copies of what I have found that might help you in your search.

I will have more available time after August 1st. However, I will be in VA in late July researching more census and other records at the court house in Franklin County. I will make a copy of your last posting and see what I can find to assist you.

Your comment that William Jr. purchased the land of William Sr. from other sibling is a good clue and I will look at land records to try and document this. If you will look carefully at the link I provided in my last response there may be some evidence to support your land purchase assumption. You will also find some birth/death dates for some of the people you mention. I also know of at least two other White Cannadays that are a part of your line and they may have more information than I on some of these people. I will try send you their e-mail contact information.

I live about five and one half hours away from Franklin in the state of Maryland now.

I hoep this clears some of your concerns.

Please and blessings, Alta Cannaday.
