From "Fairfax County Virginia Death Register 1853-1896" by Frain and Hiatt:

SAGAR, Wm. white male, d. 5 Jul 77-5-0, Fairfax, 77-5-0, Informant: A. J. Sagar, son, South Dist., Bureau of Vital Statistics: 1877:67

You would have to look at the original entry in the Death Register to know if the Clerk made an error in recording or the transcriber.

The Fairfax Historial Newspaper Index shows the earliest mention of Sagar in 1889. There are numerous articles about A. J. Sagar's work. There is also:

Fairfax Herald 8/3/1900 03 Sagar A.J. Obit. 69 years old

Be aware that earlier newspaper obituaries were usually very short, often just one line that mentioned the person died. They were not detailed as today's obituaries are.

From "Fairfax Co. Gravestones"
Flint Hill Cemetery

Wm. Sagar, b. Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co. NY, b. 5 Feb 1800, d. 5 Jul 1877
Dolly Sagar, b. Galway, Saratoga Co. NY, b. 27 Mar 1803, d. 26 Jan 1880
A. Jefferson Sagar, b. Wheeler, Steuben Co., NY, d. Washington DC, b. 17 Jun 1830, d. 30 July 1900
Hannah A. Bentley Sagar his wife "interred in Lavina, Mont.", b. 15 Jul 1843, d. 12 Jul 1913
