Carol,
I have done extensive homework on the Nelson Clarke Family.
I can tell you that Thomas and Martha were married in Caroline Co Va on April 1, 1839. An although it doesn't say my Virginia Researcher says Thomas was married prior and had a number of children, Then he an Martha had 7.
It runs like this: Fanny Clarke daughter of Edward and Polly Bastin. There is no record of Fanny having been married until after she had the six children. Then she did marry George Byrd. So when Martha was born she was given the Clarke surname. This is found in the Edward Clarke Family Genealogy. Martha and Thomas's son Robert was my former husbands gr.grand father. Thomas died at the ripe old age of 87 on 4-24-1934.
In the 1850 Essex Co Census Martha is shown with her sister Frances Byrd living with her.
If I can be of further help please let me know
Elaine
