Hi Elaine. I became interested in your post since I recognized the Bird (and Nelson, I think) name as Native American's in Essex & Caroline counties. I have Fortune & Bush ancestors. I looked at a few census' for Thomas Nelson, and I think I encountered what's making you need assistance figuring out the children. When did they marry? I assume I have the right Thomas since his wife is Martha. 1850 census an adult Frances Bird and what appears to be her children, and two other children (surname unreadable) live with them. 1860 at least 2 of the Bird children now have Nelson last names, and there's a whole slew (9)of other children. Do you think the 5 born after 1850 are theirs together? If the other older ones are his where were they in the 1850 census? Was she married to a Bird previously, and her maiden name Clarke? I've been to Essex once, and the Library of Virginia in Richmond. I hope to get back there someday in the near future.
