Hobbs Hole is today the town of Tappahannock. Your query is so broadly stated it will not likely generate many responses. You will find many posts on the Vass family of Essex on the Genforum of that name. I recall the Essex County Historical Society had a bulletin a few years ago on the watermills of Essex County. There are two books on the old homes of Essex. One is out of print, but the Essex County Museum sells a more recent one. In the colonial era Tappahannock (Hobbs Hole) was a shipping port. The economy of the county was largely based on agricultural products (tobacco in colonial days), later grains and even vegetables where were canned there.
