A new, and long-awaited book by Carroll Garnett is a "first-ever" account of the short-lived existence of Fort Lowry, an eight-gun water battery on the Rappahannock below Tappahannock, VA, and original home of the 55th VA Infantry and associated units. Garnett, a native of the area, is a retired FBI Special Agent and veteran Navy/Marine Corpsman of WW II service, who served as president of the Essex County Historical Society and was key to the recognition of this fort that guarded the "backdoor" to Fredericksburg. A special feature of the book, "Fort Lowry and Raiders on the Rappahannock" (ISBN 0-533-13766-7, Vantage Press, 516 West 34th Street, NY, NY 1001, for $24.95 plus $2.50 s/h), is the by-name listing of slaves (and their owners) and Free Blacks employed in building the fort. Other chapters deal with the Lower Rappahannock during the war. Well illustrated. Unindexed.
