Hope this helps some. Richard did have a son named David but his father was also David. David Sr., Richards father, was born in 1784 in Caswell County, NC the son of Revolutionary James Compton. I am adding a link to the court case that lists the children of David Compton.
If you want to see the important part jump to page 52 and this is where you will see the children listed.

If you need any info on the Comptons of Russell County I am more than willing to help you out. There are a few of us who have tried to straighten all the confusion out on these early Compton men. The three main Compton men in early Russell County were Jeremiah Sr, David, and Thomas. We don't know their relationship just yet but they all got there about the same time and all were probably from NC. We have all the children for David and Thomas figured out (for the most part) Jeremiah is still a project. Thomas' children got confused with the Tazewell County set of Comptons and now we are trying to get everyone on the same page.

Abraham Compton jr. left Russell county for Scott County around the time these 3 men got to Russell. For the past 100 years people have always listed Jeremiah Sr. as a brother to Abraham Jr. but now we know this was not the case.
