Francis Allen - landowner 1736 to 1780
Posted by: A. Sharp (ID *****7504) Date: August 08, 2006 at 06:24:27
  of 461

Francis Allen received two patents for land located in what is now Cumberland County. This land is located to the south of Sunny Side and Va Hwy 13, east of Sunnyside Rd (SR 654) and mostly west of Brook Hill Rd (SR 621), and appears to lie on both sides of Carter Road (SR 667).

Does anyone know anything about this man?

Has anyone found references to him or to this land?

Checking the deed indices, he is not shown as ever acquiring land by deed. He appears five times in the grantor index.

The patents:

17 Mar 1736
400 acres on both sides of Burton's Brook of Appomattox River; adjoining Hutchins Burton, John Jones, and crossing the brook with two different bounds. This brook or creek lies about half way between Deep Creek and Little Guinea Creek and flows into the Appomattox River.
Pat Bk 17, p 286

12 Jan 1747
340 acres among the branches of Burton's Brook; adjoining George Freeman, his own land (the 1736 patent), Hutchins Burton, and John Owen
Pat. Bk. 26, p 149

Grantor:

recorded 26 Feb 1749
Francis Allen to Edward Yarbrough
100 ac
DB 1, p 115

recorded 27 Jan 1755
Francis Allen to Richard Sharp
100 ac
DB 2, p 184

recorded 25 Aug 1777
Francis Allen to Isham Miles
34 ac
DB 5, p 502

recorded 28 May 1778
Francis Allen to Josiah Thomson
136 ac (notation "Guinea Road")
DB 5, p 533

recorded 28 Feb 1780
Francis Allen & Rachel his wife to Henry Skipwith
474.5 ac
DB 6, p 65

Note that the five conveyances total 844.5 acres, and his patents were for 740 acres. This could mean that the first sale of 100 acres somehow reverted back to Allen for nonpayment, that the original grants had more land than thought (but plotting them shows them to be fairly accurate), or that he acquired an extra 100 acres by means other than deed. Examination of the four deeds besides the Sharp deed may help with this question.

Sharp conveyed 32 of his 100 acres to John Jones 25 Feb 1764. The remaining 68 acres is not accounted for by deed which is indexed to a Sharp. Would like to know who later held that land and how acquired, to identify the Sharp heirs.

Help requested from anyone who has deeds from this area.
