My mother, Florence Sanderson, descended from this family. The family lived on Willis Creek, in an area called Hamilton Township that now is in the Cumberland State Game Park.

Our line: William and Ann had John Sanderson Sr., who had John Sanderson Jr., who was the father of Willis Granville Sanderson, who moved from Cumberland to Nottoway County. Willis first married Martha Miles of Cumberland in Cumberland. They had two girls, Edmonia and Emma. After Martha's death, he married Sarah Isabella Hudgins of Cumberland and moved to Nottoway. Willis and Bell's children included William Wesley Sanderson, my grandfather.

There are still Sandersons in Cumberland who descend from this family. William Sanderson's wife, Ada Walton Sanderson, was instrumental, through the Cumberland County Historical Society, of having a Cumberland history published, which names a number of the early Sandersons. This book is available from the society and can be seen at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, VA.
